Dara Sakor Airport: Transforming Cambodia’s Koh Kong Province into a Regional Hub

Dara Sakor International Airport, located in Cambodia’s southwestern Koh Kong province, is a newly constructed airport that forms part of a large-scale development project by Coastal Airport Investment Co., Ltd. Covering an initial area of 218 hectares with plans to expand further, the airport is designed to handle millions of passengers and significant cargo volumes annually.

Officially opened to domestic charter flights in December 2024, it currently serves flights primarily involving company staff and government officials, with plans to expand commercial operations as demand grows.

Key Features and Capacity

  • The airport covers an initial area of 218 hectares in its first phase, with plans to expand by an additional 1,000 hectares in future phases.
  • It is designed to handle approximately 7 million passengers and 10,000 tonnes of cargo annually in the medium term.
  • Long-term projections estimate capacity growth to 20 million passengers and 60,000 tonnes of cargo annually between 2030 and 2050.
  • Dara Sakor International Airport is Cambodia’s fourth operational airport, alongside Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, and Sihanouk International Airport.

Strategically positioned to boost connectivity to coastal areas and nearby islands, Dara Sakor Airport aims to stimulate local economic growth and tourism in the region. Its long runway and location have attracted international attention due to potential dual-use concerns, though the Cambodian government emphasizes its civilian and economic purposes.

As Cambodia’s fourth operational airport, Dara Sakor represents a major step in enhancing the country’s transportation infrastructure and regional development prospects!
