Cambodia's first aquafeed plant will begin producing fish feed and seed this month in Siem Reap and will incorporate US soy into fish feed, according to a release by the project operators. The plant is a part of a whole project called Commercialization of Aquaculture for Sustainable Trade (CAST) which was initially launched earlier this year. The plan is backed by the American Soybean Association (ASA). It is set to run until 2023 and is backed by $17.1 million in funding from the US Department of Agriculture.“CAST will accelerate production of high-demand fish species for the Cambodian market and develop a lasting aquaculture industry,” ASA said in its release issued on May 30. “A key aspect of the project strengthens local production of high-quality feed and fish.”In addition to increasing access to fish seed and feed, the CAST project aims at strengthening links in the value chain – from hatcheries and fish producers to buyers and distributors. It will cover major markets in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and six provinces along main waterway– such as Kandal, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Battambang and Pursat.Aquaculture is one of Cambodia’s most important sectors, with production growing by 17 percent in 2017 alone, to reach over 200,000 tonnes of fish. According to data from Open Development Cambodia, fish farming accounts for around a quarter of the Kingdom’s fish supply. To learn more about agriculture and industry in Cambodia, download our Investment Guide 2019.Article by:

PM proclaims end to power issues in Phnom Penh
PM proclaims end to power issues in Phnom Penh
June 6, 2022, 5:02 p.m.
Prime Minister Hun Sen announced Monday that the blackouts are a thing of the past, explaining that Phnom Penh now has dedicated power reserves in case of droughts. Speaking at a graduation ceremony for university students from Royal University of Phnom Penh on Monday, the premier admitted that there had been hiccups in prior months due to the dry season sapping hydro-electric power.According to the PM, the government will reserve 400 megawatts power in 2020 to ensure the stability of Phnom Penh’s grid. He added that, in the event of another prolonged dry season, coal and petroleum power plants will pick up the slack. The PM backed up his statements by saying that two new pieces of power equipment were already in the process of being purchased and installed. Each piece being able to reserve 200 megawatts of power.“Phnom Penh needs to hold reserves of 400 megawatts. Now, [we] have already approved the budget [to buy new equipment] and have made an order to ensure that it will be completely installed in October,” he said, adding that one will come from Finland and the other from Germany.“Whenever the hydropower dam cannot produce sufficient power, the power from the engines will supply Phnom Penh. Next year there is no reason Phnom Penh will have power cuts.”Cambodia witnessed regular nationwide power cuts for nearly three months this year – from mid-March to mid-May. Many blamed dry season droughts which impacted production at hydropower dams, the main source of electricity in the Kingdom.According to Hun Sen, Cambodia is diversifying its sources of energy to include coal as well as renewable sources. Currently, there are three coal power plants in the country capable of producing a combined 370 megawatts of power. An additional plant is currently under construction. When it comes online it will be able to generate 130 megawatts. The premier’s comments are sure to garner cheers from Cambodia’s construction sector, which is in the midst of a massive boom.According to data from the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, 1,420 building projects were approved in the first four months of this year. That represents a 21% increase over the same period in 2018. The approved projects are valued at a combined $2.7 billion. This total marks a 67% increase over the value of the projects approved last year.Want to win a free Phnom Penh vacation? Complete our annual survey and you could win!

PM Hun Sen says tax revenue up
PM says tax and customs revenue up from last year
June 6, 2022, 5:02 p.m.
Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday said that Cambodia’s internal revenue from customs and taxation increased noticeably in first five months of 2019, reaching almost 60% of the year’s target.Speaking to graduating students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh Monday morning, the PM said that revenues on taxes collected from January to May accounted for 58% of 2019’s year-end target. Customs revenue, meanwhile, was at 54% of the year-end goal in the first five months. “The culture of paying tax among our people is getting better and better,” he said.He did not provide any amounts regarding tax collection thus far this year. However, according to Cambodia’s national budget for 2019, the target for customs and taxation collection is set at $4.5 billion. The prime minister’s statements come on the heels of a move by the Ministry of Economy and Finance late last month to cancel a 1% withholding tax. This was announced during Hun Sen’s visit to Japan for an investment seminar. At the event, he trumpeted the Kingdom as a friendly nation for investments of all kinds. The Ministry of Economy and Finance issued a release on May, 29 on the cancellation of the 1% minimum tax which was announced by the Prime Minister Hun Sen in Cambodia’s investment environment seminar held in Japan. Withholding taxes are usually used as a means to combat tax evasion. Removing the tax aims to attract more investors to the country.Previously, commentators have championed the importance of taxation and customs revenue, saying it is a means to decrease the Kingdom’s dependence on foreign nations. To learn more about taxation in the Kingdom, be sure to head over to our Investment Guide 2019

Hotel sector eyes expansion in luxury segment
June 6, 2022, 5:02 p.m.
In decades past, Cambodia main tourist demographic was young Western backpackers travelling on a shoestring budget. Of course, budget hostels can still be found across the country. Yet, a new level of accomodation is sweeping across the nation.According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia welcomed over six million international tourists last year. That marked an increase of 11% over the previous year. What’s more, the government projects similar growth by the end of 2019. But who are these new tourists? The biggest group is made up of those coming from China. They accounted for nearly two million last year, in fact. Earlier this year the minister of tourism claimed that figure would hit three million by the end of this year.Seakcheang Leng, marketing manager for Phnom Penh’s Lumiere Hotel, said that there has been a shift in recent years towards more visitors from Asia rather than Western nations.“In addition, we see that new arrivals tend to be more inclined to try new hotel properties as they favor new rooms equipped with new furniture and fittings.”Lumiere Hotel, which has been operating in the capital since 2017, is one of the establishments offering accommodations in this higher price point. Rooms there run for between $100 and $150 a night. The hotel boasts amenities such as rooftop jacuzzi, pool and meeting rooms.Leng added that Lumiere’s customers are drawn by its modern designs.“The trend is that millennials are now becoming the primary consumer markets and these travellers are really technology-savvy.”Power of Phnom PenhDespite Siem Reap’s status as the tourist capital of Cambodia, industry experts say that Phnom Penh has the most potential for this expansion into higher segments of the market.Chenda Suos, secretary-general of Cambodian Valuers and Estate Agents Association, said that in addition to holiday tourists, Phnom Penh also draws business travellers, short-term NGO workers, domestic tourists and many other key demographics.“The hotel market in Phnom Penh hasn’t neared oversupply yet … the city will continue its expansion toward the suburbs which will lead more accommodation,” he said. However, many still note the need for increased human capital, skills training and education in the hospitality sector.Peng Ponna, assistant dean and lecturer of faculty of Tourism and Hospitality of Pannasastra University of Cambodia, said that hotel sector in Phnom Penh is still more affordable than comparable rooms in other Southeast Asian countries. Yet businesses should aim to boost soft skills of their employees.“The hotel sector is providing a lot of jobs for Cambodian people … as the market becomes more competitive hotels will need to provide better services in order to stand out,” Ponna said.Leng from Lumiere concurred, adding that the market was changing. She said that boosting soft skills goes hand-in-hand with technological advancements.“Guests can now easily compare prices, check availability, read reviews and book accommodation all on their smartphones,” she said.“We expect the competition to get even stiffer in the future as options diversify with the rise of rental apps, guesthouses, hotels and resorts.”Whether you're looking for short-term or long-term accomodations, start your search with Realestate.com.kh.

Over 20,000 people descended upon Koh Pich over the weekend, many of them putting down big money for condos, borey homes, land or cars at Realestate.com.kh’s massive Home & Lifestyle Expo 2019. The company’s CEO claimed it was their most successful event to date.Taking place at Koh Pich Exhibition Centre on April 26 and 27 in 2019, the event hosted exhibitors from every section of the property market. Borey developers were there, as were condo developers, plot land dealers, agencies,  lawyers, banks, construction firms and architects. There was also lifestyle luxury brands there selling cars, watches, handbags, furniture and much more. Many were offering their biggest discounts of the year. The event didn’t disappoint, either. Many exhibitors were able to connect with quality buyers and book sales that will smash their yearly sales quotas.Affordable properties were the focus of the show, so it’s no surprise that middle-class Cambodians made up a large contingent of attendees.“Around half of the attendees were local,” said Realestate.com.kh CEO Tom O’Sullivan, adding that the remaining demographics were mostly Chinese and just a handful of other international visitors.“We really wanted to make the event into a blockbuster weekend and we were floored by the overwhelmingly positive response. By all accounts, this was one of the biggest real estate gatherings that Southeast Asia has ever seen.”Explosive salesUrban Village, a development project in Phnom Penh’s Chak Angre Leu, was particularly hot with real estate shoppers. The group reportedly sold 40 units over the weekend worth over $3.5 million combined.Arata Garden Residences was another hot ticket project on the weekend. They sold nine properties, raking in over $250,000. Local agency Pointer Property had an exciting weekend as they recorded four sales worth around $70,000 each.7 Residence hit it big with a single sale of a unit worth half a million dollars. But sales weren’t the only way to judge the success of exhibitors. In fact, many collected hundreds of new sales leads that will continue to pay off throughout the year. PHMK  Real Estate, Capital Partners, Bred Bank, Royal Platinum, Air Apartments, Ohana Home Japan, La Bassac, RHB Bank, and Snowbell Hotel all left with over 100 red hot leads. The retail side of the show wasn’t without its heavy hitters either.Carmaker Nissan reported that a lucky buyer rode home in a new $50,000 luxury vehicle bought at the show. Honda, on the other hand, sold four motorbikes for around $3,000 each. Sofa Shop, a furniture retailer, sold eight pieces during the show worth nearly $10,000 combined. Sales figures are still streaming in from the huge event. However, Realestate.com.kh hopes to surpass the record from its previous event, which generated around $30 million in sales.  “This event proves that Cambodia’s real estate sector is more alive than its ever been. Indeed, the future looks bright,” said O’Sullivan.End Of Year Property Sale set for November 27th & 28thRealestate.com.kh is excited to announce the sixth iteration of its hugely successful event series. feng shui decoration
Five simple way to spice up your home decor with Chinese feng shui
June 6, 2022, 5:01 p.m.
The traditional Chinese practice of feng shui aims to harmonise individuals with their surrounding environment. Many Westerners incorrectly think this is just about furniture arrangement. However, it’s much more than that. Many believe proper feng shui can bring happiness and luck to any space, whether that be your home or working place. Throughout history, feng shui has been used to organise urban areas, parks, homes and even tombs. Feng shui’s primary directives involve making inhabitants feel refreshed and hopeful. In a nutshell, feng shui is more than moving your sofa to the other side of the room. You don’t even need to buy anything to boost the energy of your own space. Here are five main aspects of feng shui that can help bring a little ancient Chinese energy to your home.SunlightHomes that follow traditional feng shui should take advantage of natural light as much as possible. After all, electricity is a recent technology. In the past, it was important to let the sunlight into your house so you could see. Now, however, it’s still important to let the sunlight into your living space. Sunlight can lift your mood and reduce stress. It makes rooms feel open and free. Plus, getting a little bit more vitamin D never hurts, right? Under traditional feng shui guidelines, sunlight was thought to ward off evil spirits.ColourColour is another essential element of feng shui. Just like light, colour was thought to affect the energy and flow of a certain space. Of course, light colours have warming and lifting energy. On the other hand, dark colors are believed to be heavy and cold. It is recommended that you use dark and light colours in combination to fit the feeling of each room. The tones must be compatible. For instance, blue and white are two colours that are thought to look harmonic together. This is one aspect of feng shui that is already familiar to people in the West. Decorators are already familiar with complementary colours and clashing colours.PlantsPlants play an important role in any home decoration. Indeed, a home that follows the techniques of feng shui is no different. Plants are, of course, living organisms so the fact that they produce energy is undeniable. Scientific studies have often supported the fact that rooms with plants feel more relaxed and comfortable. In feng shui, plants are particularly powerful if they are in places where you see them in the morning.AirHave you ever complained that a room feels too “stuffy”? Maybe there just wasn’t enough airflow. In feng shui, having enough natural air movement is pivotal in bringing energy to space. Proponents of this practice say that fresh air contributes to the health of inhabitants and improves vitality.Cleaning on a daily basisLastly, you may not know that cleanliness is a big part of feng shui. It is said that clutter and disrepair cause negative energy to enter a space. Try getting rid of anything unnecessary and reducing your possessions. Many in the US are following the teaching of Marie Kondo from Japan who instructs her students to get rid of anything that doesn’t “spark joy.” This idea jives with that of feng shui.Stay up-to-date on the real estate industry in Cambodia and get real-time updates on real estate news as they happen. Best Cambodia provinces to visit in 2019
Best Cambodia provinces to visit in 2019
June 6, 2022, 5:02 p.m.
Khmer New Year is here again. It’s a time of year when many people pack up and take a trip. Many chose to travel around Asia. But tourism to locations in Cambodia is on the rise, too. Of course, everyone knows about Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. But if you’ve been in Cambodia for a while chances are you’ve already been there. So we’ve decided to look at places that won’t be crowded with tourist. Here’s our guide to the other places in Cambodia you should consider visiting this year:MondulkiriIt’s the largest and most sparsely populated province in Cambodia. So, it’s no surprise that most of the province’s best features are its natural wonders. It hosts pine tree forests, mountains, coffee plantations and is home to most of the country’s elephants. The waterfalls in Mondulkiri are quite popular. Most well-known are:Sen Monorom Waterfall is a short trip from the provincial capital.Bou Sra Waterfall is a short drive from Sen Monorom. It’s one of the largest in the country.Romnea Waterfall is just 10 kilometres from Sen Monorom. Eugene Morozov, a Russian expat, said he recently rode his motorbike to Mondulkiri from Phnom Penh, but in the future would opt for a bus because of poor road quality.“There isn’t much to do besides hiking and experiencing nature. But it’s not hard to find guesthouses in Sen Monorom,” he added.KepRight down the road from Kampot, Kep is still off the beaten path for tourism. It won’t be for long, however. The area has beautiful beaches, an amazing wildlife park, organic pepper farms and a sleepy vibe.Rabbit Island just offshore is great for a few days, or stop by the butterfly gardens outside of town. And don’t forget to order a crab dish at one of the seafood shacks next to the market. Guesthouses and bungalows are still the main types of accommodation here. There are still a couple of larger hotels, however. It’s easy enough to catch a bus or taxi to Kep, or even take a tuk-tuk there from Kampot.Exploring old colonial villas is quite popular in Kep. Read all about old French design in the country over at our guide to colonial buildings in Cambodia.BattambangBattambang is usually just known for its agriculture. The province has tons of quirks that you won’t find else, however. First off, it is one of the best places in Cambodia to find French colonial buildings. In fact, many of these places have been converted into guesthouses, so you can experience them first hand. Don’t forget to capture it with plenty of Instagram pics! There’s also the ruins of Wat Banan, from the 10th century. It may not be as huge as Angkor Wat but you can bet it won’t be swarmed with tourists either. We can’t forget the famed Bamboo Train, either. Known as “Nori,” the cars are wooden platforms powered by small gas engines. For $5 you can tour the entire area in a truly unique way.For a deeper dive into all things Battambang, read our ultimate guide to Battambang to find out more.KratieSitting right on the Mekong river in northeast Cambodia is Kratie province. This place is definitely not a typical tourist location. On the other hand, many stop here for a night when bussing between Cambodia and southern Laos.Check out Koh Trong, an island in the middle of the Mekong. Kratie is also known as a place to see the river’s elusive dolphins. It can be tricky to catch a sighting. But it’s about the journey not the destination, right?Sok Sothea, a Khmer language teacher and avid traveller, said he had stopped in Kratie three times on trips to other parts of Cambodia.“There are a lot of colonial buildings there. I also like to visit Wat Sasau 100, or Pagoda of 100 Pillars,” he said.Because it isn’t a huge tourist spot, there’s a smaller selection of accommodations in Kratie. They’re all affordable, however, so stay for a night or two and see what life is like.Koh KongKoh Kong is usually looked over in favour of Sihanoukville next door. It gained the spotlight briefly in 2017 when plans were announced for an airport there. Read the whole story here.Being near to the Thai border means there are a couple of casinos here. If you want to discover more about the gaming industry in the Kingdom, read our guide to casinos in Cambodia. The province is still much more low-key than Sihanoukville. Sothea, who has been there twice, said that he liked to go for walks through mangrove forests there.“There are so many hotels there and lots of good restaurants,” he said, adding that the roads were excellent by Cambodian standards.“I recommend taking a drive along the National Road 48 Bridge. It’s one of the longest in the country.”A traveller's paradiseThere you have it! Five spots that are off the beaten path in terms of tourism. These spots are growing in popularity. Especially as more Cambodians enter the middle class and have more disposable income. Tourism is such a large part of the Kingdom's economy, however. It's safe to say that some of these places will become as significant in coming years as Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Kampot are today. If you want to learn more about how tourism plays into the economy in Cambodia be sure to browse through our 2019 Investment Guide. It has tons of information about every sector of the market here. And, of course, read through all of our location profiles to learn about all the different areas of Cambodia.
